Shrinky Dink Mermaid Bracelets

My best girl and I have really been into mermaids lately. I adore her artwork, especially these:

Since playing with Shrinky Dinks has been on my list for a while, we made some mermaid Shrinky Dink bracelets.  We used this stuff that I bought at Michaels. You have to use permanent markers on it, and I got nice results with Staedtler Lumocolor markers. Michaels also carries Shrinky Dink paper to go through inkjet printers, which I'm going to try too.

Here's my bracelet. I found the seaweed-colored chain and findings at Joanne Fabrics.

Here's my dearie with hers:

We did make the charms a wee bit big. I think that only trial and error could determine the right size to start with. Also, it didn't occur to me to color on both sides of the charms until later, but that would have been even better, I think.

The best part was watching the plastic shrink. I don't think that even us adults could tire of watching the magic that happens in three minutes in the oven.

Happy Monday! I hope that your week goes well.

  1. Very Kool! You know how much I love mermaids! Funny, last night I was going over Isabellas math homework and I noticed a doodle...it was a 'reverse mermaid' I will have to bring that image to life and surprise her.
Your bracelets are sweet, what a wonderful craft to do together :)

  2. Your bracelet is just adorable! How lovely to have a beautiful wearable thing your daughter designed for you....
Can you colour it in after it has been shrunk, or is that not possible?
and thank you for your comment on my socks.
